First, happily bumbling bees are wild over each of these varieties. Second, deer, rabbits and rodents don’t like to munch on them. Third, they are each good naturalizers in horticultural zones 6 through 8. And fourth, they each make fabulous display, dried and cut flowers! What more could you ever ask of a bulb?

• 100 Allium siculum bulgaricum: The 1863 Sicilian Honey Lily. Umbels of 2"-wide, greenish-white bell-shaped flowers flushed purple and edged in white. Bulb size: 8 cm/up. Bloom time: May/June. 32" to 36" tall. HZ: 6-10.
• 100 Allium sphaerocephalon: The 16th century Drumstick Allium. 1" to 1 1/2"-wide egg-shaped composite flowers that open green and mature to rich crimson-purple. Bulb size: 6 cm/up. Bloom time: July. 24" tall. HZ: 4-9.
