Oriental Lilies
A cross between the Korean L. speciosum and the Japanese L. auratum, Oriental Lilies have large flowers with reflexed flower petals and a wonderfully sweet fragrance. Prized by garden and floral designers alike, Oriental Lilies are a mainstay of summer perennial gardens and lavish cut flower arrangements.
It’s best to plant Lily bulbs in the fall so they may develop more mature root systems and, therefore, more substantive plants the following summer. To promote years of repeat blooms, plant the bulbs a good 8” deep and 10” apart in well-draining, neutral pH soil and good sunlight. Deadhead faded flowers and allow the foliage and stalk to die back naturally. Top dress the planting site with an organic granular 4-10-6 fertilizer at planting time, when the sprouts emerge and as the flowers begin to die back. A tad less hardy than Orienpet and Chinese Trumpet Lilies, Oriental Lilies benefit from a 2" layer of mulch after the surface of the ground freezes to protect the bulbs from arctic temperature spikes over the winter. The last bulbs to be harvested, we ship them to the coldest horticultural zones first, just as soon as they are in from the annual harvest in mid-October. Lily Class: Oriental. Bulb size: 16/18 centimeters. July/August. HZ: 5-8. Height: 3' to 4'.
