      Horticulture Tips

  • Store bulbs in cool, dry conditions with good ventilation prior to planting. Never in a warm or damp area in a closed box. Please keep all boxes open!

  • Plant bulbs in well-draining soil. Generally, the best soil is a sandy loam. Do not plant bulbs shallow! Follow the instructions for planting depths and sunlight requirements. Flower bulbs prefer neutral pH soil. Please do not ever add horse manure, mushroom compost or other "hot" manure or compost to your flower bulb beds. We suggest our Organic Dutch Flower Bulb Fertilizer (4-10-6 composition) as the best fertilizer.

  • Heirloom flower bulbs
  • Moist soil conditions
  • Shady conditions
  • Fragrant flower bulbs
  • Rockgardens
  • Deer proof bulbs

    • Water the area thoroughly after planting unless heavy rains or a hard freeze are expected.

    • Apply bulb fertilizer three times a year: in the fall for the root system; when the sprouts first poke through the soil for the foliage and flower; and when the flower dies for the bulb itself.
    • Do not apply top mulch until after the ground freezes! Mulch should not be more than about two inches thick. We consider the best mulching mediums to be: straw, salt marsh hay or oak leaves.

    • To promote perennialization, do not cut flowers from your display gardens. Allow the flower to die, "dead-head" the flower (to keep seed pods from forming) and permit the foliage to die back naturally. Don't "tie up" dying foliage. Plant a cutting garden!

    • The bloom times listed are for horticultural zone five. Bloom times, heights and colors are only approximations and are affected by weather and site conditions.
